Playing It Cool

A few weekends ago Marty and I were walking back from grabbing dinner and he breaks it to me:

"So, I've been trying to play it cool, but I've been thinking about The O.C. a lot. I really want to know what's going to happen. Do you think Ryan and Taylor are going to start dating? Are they going to kick Summer out of school?"

I'll catch up the parents real quick: The O.C. is a teen drama series set in Orange County about love pursuits of skinny, acne-free, rich teenagers and their slutty, sexy parents who have great wardrobes. As you can imagine, their lives are really hard. It's great.

By "play it cool," Marty meant he didn't talk to me about it all through our hour-long dinner or during the eight hours when he was at work. He waited until after we left the restaurant. Nice show of self-restraint there, buddy.

Marty's hooked and I feed his habit by downloading, I mean legitimately paying for, episodes as soon as they air in The States each week. This season is far better than last year, what with the witty banter and lack of Marissa. We heart Taylor Townsend.

And the good friend that he is, he wanted to let the blogoshere know that they should be watching this show because it is Q-U-A-L-I-T-Y.

Speaking of Marty, he thinks the weekend work and 16-hour weekdays are coming to a close after this weekend. Deadline is Monday, and he doesn't want to ask for an extension. He's working all day today, and will likely need to do an all-nighter Sunday. Yuck.

News for me: I didn't get that job for which I had a second interview. But I can't say I'm too disappointed; I don't think I really wanted it. I have registration interview with a head-hunting company on Wednesday, which sounds promising.

And a note to Mom: I set up an email account for you and sent the details to Tyler and Dad. Cousin Nick wants to contact you about visiting Rockford. I'm writing you here in case they forget to tell you about it.

Another amen to the "Marissa sucks" sentiment. Man, I'm so glad they killed her off.

Killing off Marissa is the worst thing they could ever do. Let me explain.

Throughout seasons one and two of the O.C. the constant tension was built. Seth and Summer served as good background characters that you could enjoy but the real heart of the show was waiting for Marissa to get shot in the face or something. Every week we would tune in (occasionally tooning in, which sounds like a double entendre but is in fact not) hoping to see her get disfigured by acid or stabbed through the heart with a piece of glass. It is what kept us coming back.

Now she is dead, and to make it worse they killed her in a pretty boring, painless way. This is the payoff they should have saved for the show's finale so that every true fan could walk away happy. Instead, I just walked away.

Do they still talk about comics?
