I don't get political here but...
I'm in Germany this week at a conference where European animation producers hawk their products to broadcasters for next season. They show their pilots to an audience of a few hundred people and give a little talk about the inspiration for their shows.
And would you believe it, Sarah Palin has been a running joke in many of the presentations. So many of the delegates here are asking me what the hell my country is doing. It. Is. Totally. Embarrassing.
I've been having a huge political discussion with some misguided Republicans in the more private setting of Facebook (i.e. pages my parents don't read), that I encourage you to join in if you are my friend there. There a former classmate is so warped that she has decided to vote McCain because she believes Obama is for late-term abortions. ( Where do conservatives get these utter falsehoods? Oh yeah... Murdoch, the man who ruined the country. Obama is clear on his position AGAINST legalizing late term abortions.) Although she admits she would like gays to have the right to marry, she is choosing to vote pro-life. "Nobody's forcing you to have an abortion," we say. "If it doesn't affect you, why not vote to give people the people who are already here rights, instead of saving some imaginary babies?" When pressed on her infuriating logic, she can't give a good reason but just says "That's what I believe, so I'm not changing." Oh, the hypocrisy!
This article my friend Chad alerted me to is OUTRAGEOUS: Read this article and then tell me Republicans are fighting fair, I dare you.
I'm just aghast that this election is so close. And absolutely amazed. It's pretty much all I think about.
Now, does someone have room at their table for Thanksgiving? I'm pretty sure I'm not invited anymore.
Oh yeah, about Thanksgiving...Marty and I are moving back to the States in October. We found out last week and are working out the details. More on that later.

Don't stress out Megan. This election is NOT going to be close. I don't believe the polls any more. For one thing, the American people just aren't that stupid to elect 200-year-old cancerous troll and give Dan Quayle's backwoods little sister a shot at the White House.
For another thing, polls are fundamentally flawed. Questions are all predicated on a bogus hypothetical: "If the election were held today..." Well, it's not. Pollsters ask that way because 30-40 percent of folks don't make up their minds about their vote until the last weeks before an election. If they asked the right question -- "Who are you going to vote for?" -- the results would leave a third of the electorate undecided and no media organization would pay for a poll that says nothing.
Remember, Obama has David Axelrod running his campaign -- the same Axelrod who's kept Daley in power for centuries. And Rep. Rahm Emanuel, who engineered the Democratic takeover of Congress in '06 is another adviser. The Chicago Machine got Kennedy elected. It'll get Obama elected too.
On the plus side, no-one in the lower 48 has ever cast a vote for Palin, so at the moment she just looks like a kooky choice by a Republican party so desperate to seem progressive that it threw its hat in the ring with the first person it could find who owned both a vagina and a shotgun.
But yes, the polls don't look convincing. Partly I agree with Nate, and think that they're partly-educated guesswork that at best might be quite accurate, or at worst are stabs in the dark designed to give news something to bang on about.
glad to hear you'll be returning to the land of hope and dreams.
Don't worry so much about the election. Steel and calm.
Today's polls have Obama ahead by 5 points, and are showing that Palin's becoming a running joke not only in Germany but back home too.
Still no sign of my absentee ballot though... It didn't show up in 2004 either. When do you think I should start getting suspicious.
Oh yeah - you suck for moving home.
No...you ROCK for moving home! Personally, I'll go ahead and vote for someone not connected to the machine, and I don't believe Rupert Murdoch ruined the country at all. You'd have to go pretty far to actually ruin America, but then again I'm part of the jingo-headed crowd. I also manage to keep my cool when it comes to this, mostly because I'm comfortable set in my beliefs, and I view politics as somewhat pointless, because when you really get down to it the debate doesn't change much.
On a different subject, I'm sorry if I made you think if I was getting down on myself with my latest Myspace blog. Realistically speaking, I DON'T have much vocal talent when it comes to others, and I WAS walking in there blind. Or at least with cataracts and glaucoma. However, it was still fun and proved to be a learning experience if nothing else.
Yeah, don't worry about the election. The vast majority who are worried about the defense of our culture and the long-term existence of our economy will prevail. I agree, it will not be close in electoral votes. BTW, if you want to read Obama's words about late term abortions (afraid "viability" in the Roe decision would make all late term abortions illegal, and hence he opposed the defense of life bill in Illinois) go to the link:
http://www.jillstanek.com/archives/2008/02/links_to_barack.html
Obama's statement on p. 85-88 or use search to find it.
OOps. I did not mean to point to Jill Stankk's site, just the Illinois transcript:
http://www.ilga.gov/senate/transcripts/strans92/ST033001.pdf
The way I read that transcript is that Obama opposes the bill for two key reasons:
1) The bill grants rights to the a fetus that was deemed non-viable before the abortion was started. If a fetus is granted rights in this situation it would, in essence, be a back-door way to overturn RvW, as is essentially grants a fetus the rights of a citizen.
2) The bill is similar to another piece of legislation that Illinois passed only to have it struck down as unconstitutional by a higher court.
Personally I want a president who can see what is really at stake when an issue is presented to him and a president that wants to uphold our constitution. I mean geeze, give the constitution a break. It's been stepped on a LOT the past eight years.
Voting based on the issue of abortion is just incredible. If a woman doesn't want to have an abortion, no one is forcing her to have one. On the other hand, anti-choicers want to control everyone's options surrounding a whole range of personal issues--from the right way to be married to whether to bring a fatally handicapped child into the world.
So much for "small government."
Well, abortion or not is NOT the reason for a choice for President.
But, Marty, RvW contains language that makes it clear that the intent was to allow abortion when the fetus was non-viable, hence not a person. THe Illinois bill that Obama spoke against was virtually identical to a bill passed by the Senate 98-0. Technology has advanced. Fetuses are viable and hence persons. Time for a new ruling.
Time to change hearts. Our first date was seeing the movie Alfie with its very profound lyrics. Changed our hearts.
What's it all about Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give?
Or are we meant to be kind?
And if only fools are kind, Alfie,
Then I guess it's wise to be cruel.
And if life belongs only to the strong, Alfie,
What will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I Believe there's a Heaven above, Alfie.
I know ther's something much more.
Something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.
Without true love we just exist Alfie.
Untl you find the love you've missed you're nothing.
When you walk, let your heart lead the way.
I don't think this movie would be very politically correct today.
Love, Mom and Dad
